Until recently the Korean scientific community been hesitant to engage with the creationists, fearing that it could increase the credibility of the movement. However, silence is no any longer an option.

What is Evolution?

Over many generations the changes could result in the emergence of new species. Natural selection is the predominant theory of evolution. It explains how people with traits that are advantageous can reproduce faster and longer than those with less advantageous traits. This differing reproduction may be a catalyst to the development and emergence of new species.

The word "evolution", which comes from the Latin for revealing or unrolling, has been used in many different ways as the concept has developed, both in science and elsewhere. Early evolutionists like Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predetermined to evolve into a different species. Etienne Geoffroy St-Hilaire, Lamarck's embryologist disciple who coined the term "transmutation" to describe this view. Charles Lyell, in his Principles of Geology, published in 1833, attacked the idea of evolution, and borrowed the term from Geoffroy’s student.

More recently, evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process when living things develop characteristics that increase their chances of survival or ability to reproduce offspring. Over time, genetic variability can cause a population to acquire new physical characteristics or biological functions. Such a shift in gene frequency is known as natural selection and it drives most evolutionary change. However, non-genetic changes such as the growth in muscle mass due to diet or exercise cannot be considered to be examples of evolution because they are not inherited by future generations.

Creationists make the argument that evolution is controversial even though it has been proven true by thousands of scientific tests and it has been tested over time. They claim that the concept should not be taught in schools. In South Korea, creationists won a few victories over evolution in high school textbooks. This includes the removal of references about the evolutionary history of humans and Archaeopteryx which is a feathered dinosaur believed to be the ancestral bird's first ancestor.

Why is Evolution Important for Humanity?

Evolution explains the origins of Earth and all living species. It is also one of the pillars of biology, and helps scientists understand how living things work and develop. Evolution also shows how various species are linked. Scientists study evolution in order to better comprehend nature and make valuable discoveries, such as the development of new drugs.

The evidence for evolution is overwhelming. There is no other scientific theory that explains so much about the universe as well as life on Earth and has been rigorously tested and confirmed over many years. Many people, even some religious leaders, are in favor of the scientific theory. It is important to remember that evolutionary biology doesn't contradict religions, since the theory deals only with processes, objects, and events within the physical world.

In South Korea, a group called the Society for Textbook Revise, an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research (KAC), is campaigning for textbook content on the evolution of horses and their avian ancestor Archaeopteryx.

It is crucial to keep in mind, however, that the evidence in favor of evolution is overwhelming. The evidence for evolution comes from many sources, such as fossils, genetics, and even the behavior of living creatures. The evidence is also independently verified by other scientists.

The vast majority of scientists support the theory of evolution. The reasons for this support are diverse. Certain scientists study evolution to make practical discoveries, such as developing new drugs and other treatments, while others use it to improve the quality of animal and plant species, typically to benefit humans. Some are simply curious, and others have a deep religious belief in God and seek to know how the universe functions.

What is Creationism?

Creationists believe that God created everything in the universe. They also believe that the Bible is the word of God and should be taken seriously. Although some creationists are not Christian however, many are. Creationists are usually divided into two categories: Young Earth Creationists (YEC) or old earth creationists.

The YECs are perhaps the most well known type of creationist and they believe that God created the world exactly as described in the Bible. YECs believe that the biblical account of the creation's six days is literal, and that the universe and the life on Earth began only recently.

OECs are not as well-known however they're just as passionate about their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe that the universe and all life on Earth are billions of years old, and that evolution is a myth.

Both forms of creationism deny the idea that scientific principles like natural selection and biogenesis can explain how life started on Earth. They argue that evolution is inconceivable because it requires miracles. The founders of modern science shunned miracles out of fear they might lose their credibility.

Some creationists believe in both naturalistic evolution and special creation, and call their belief "theistic evolution." It is sometimes referred to as "continuous creationism" or "evolution from the original species." In this belief system, God creates the original species, and then allows them to change over time. In the end, these evolutionary changes will result in new species like the original ones.

Other creationists hold that God created the universe and all living things in one event, called the Great Flood. Creationists believe that all the original species were created at the same time and that they gradually evolved. They reject the concept of abiogenesis and assert that self-replicating life cannot arise from non-living matter.

In general, the creationists oppose the teaching of evolution in schools. Numerous professional organizations like the National Science Teachers Association and the Association for Science Teacher Education are in support of this view as do the American Anthropological Association and the Geological Society of America. However, certain scientists and educational institutions are more flexible, and permit the inclusion of creationism and evolution in their curriculum.

What exactly is Creationism in Korea?

When people think about the concept of creationism, a lot think of the United States. However, South Korea is also home to an anti-evolutionist movement. Publishers of high-school textbooks announced recently that they would remove references to evolution from their textbooks. A group called the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) is an independent organization that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research and has been the driving force behind the move. STR has secured its first victory by eliminating examples of the evolution of the horse as well as an avian ancestor, the Archeopteryx in textbooks. The focus is now on removing snippets of Darwin's notorious finch research as well as on human evolution as well.

On August 6 and 7, 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. This was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six lecturers from outside the country, including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin presented to an audience of several thousand. KACR members and KACR have also given lectures on the subject of creation science at major seminaries. KACR intends to establish a Creation Science Education Center.
